Semester One 2009-2010



Welcome to Grade 12 University English.  As part of your preparation for studies in university, your English class will help you to build your analytic and writing skills.

The course focuses on understanding and analyzing a variety of texts as well as building skills in different areas of writing.  Please read the course outline carefully.

The course is organized into four units of study.  Please organize your binder into five distinct sections; drama will require two: one for Long Day's Journey and one for Hamlet.


In an effort to reduce paper use, I will use this wiki as my primary tool for out-of-classroom communication with you. While we will refer to overheads of assignments and reference materials in class, rather than hand them out for you to place in your binder and promptly forget about or lose, I will post them on the wiki.  You can access them at any time for reference.




1. Prose – developing a sense of the value of writing will be a focus as we complete close readings of a number of essays and short non-fiction pieces. With a better understanding of the rhetorical strategies essayists use, students will be better able to craft their own informal essays. These essays, as well as a prose test, will be the major assessments for this unit.

2. Drama – Long Day’s Journey into Night and Hamlet. Eugene O’Neill’s autobiographical work A Long Day’s Journey into Night provides students with an introduction to modern drama. Considered one of the most important playwrights in the twentieth century, O’Neill offers
a riveting view into what it means to be a family, and into the space between our visions of ourselves and our reality. In Hamlet, we will explore
what it means to be human, and we will join Hamlet in his struggle to live as a moral man in a corrupt world. What action is possible for him?

3. Novel – A renowned Canadian novel by a prominent writer, Robertson Davies, Fifth Business allows us to delve into history, mythology,
psychology, and many other interesting and inspiring fields of study. Students will read independently and contribute to class discussions and tasks. Your summative assignment in this unit is a major evaluation in the course.

4. Independent Novel Study/Research Essay – as part of the course, you will complete and submit a research essay. Starting early in the term,
students will choose a novel and begin independent reading. This project will be marked in stages, with the final product a literary essay that
includes secondary sources for support. More information will follow. Here is the assignment sheet for the ISU. Please keep careful track of due dates; process is worth 5% of your final grade for this class. They're easy marks if you work consistently and stay organized! As part of the process, you will have a student-teacher conference with me in which we discuss your thesis.
